New Series, FOR THE TIME BEING (Lockdown Diaries).

FOR THE TIME BEING is a series of images taken throughout the various lockdowns we’ve had here in Hasting, some of which you might have seen on my Insta or in a previous blog post. Hopefully the series gives you a sense of the stillness and sometimes emptiness of this peculiar time, plus the new kind of intimacy with home and locale that so many of us had.

New Portrait Photography

Here’s a round-up of some portraits all taken in the second half of 2020, and Jan 2021. The bulk of them were taken at two different Boiler Room events, and feature Rada, Bina, fellow photographer Lou Jasmine, Mr Eazi and Haich Ber Na. There is also one of Sagal, taken for GD4YA records. It’s been really lovely meeting new people during the pandemic, especially as it hasn’t happened that often.

Hastings Lockdown Diary- a daily photo diary

Lockdown 2.0 started for the South East of England (including Hastings) last week.

While I took quite a few photos from the last lockdown and even got featured on the brilliant Shutterhub, this time I’m aiming for greater discipline and consistency.

So I’ve set myself a challenge to take & post at least one photo per day from my camera (not my phone) throughout Lockdown 2.0.

Vision of Sound podcast finale episode.

For over a year I’ve been working on The Vision of Sound, a podcast on the intersection of art & music. It’s been an absolute pleasure chatting to creative people that make work about or inspired by music, and I’ve learnt so much!

13 years of Burial's Untrue

Remember remember the 5th of November. It was 13 years ago today that Burial’s Untrue was released into the stratosphere. It’s now officially a teenager.

Burial had already gifted us with his self-titled album and a couple of EP’s, but this one hit differently.

I cried when I first heard it, as did my friend Hanna who texted me upon her first listen. I bet some of you reading this did too.

Makeup & Mirrors: Behind the Scenes with Ocean All Over

These photos are from behind the scenes with Ocean All Over at The National Centre for Craft & Design in Sleaford in September. I was there to document the company’s two socially distanced performances on the lawn in front of the centre - you can find all of those photos on the special Ocean All Over page in the Navigation menu.

The Medium is the message- an article about Dubstep Forum's legacy

A big thanks to Richard Akingbehin who wrote this really well researched and thoughtful feature about the Dubstep forum and its impact on the evolution of Dubstep. It’s illustrated with 5 of my photos of the early Dubstep scene, from my Drumz Of The South series.

I was happy to be mentioned in the feature for my contributions to Dubstep Forum in the form of links to my Flickr Albums of events like DMZ, FWD>> and Skull Disco.

I was an active user of the forum from 2004 onwards and it was very important in building my network and growing an audience for my music photography. I made friends through the forum that I am still in touch with today and while as Richard points out, the forum went from being something fairly intimate to an absolute beast, it’s still very close to my heart!

All of my GD4YA record label photography so far!

I just LOVE LOVE LOVE seeing my photography transformed into the record labels for GD4YA’s releases! Putting them together like this, you can really see what the art direction is all about! The photos are fairly close to those seen in my original Drumz of the South series which wasn’t just about dance-floors & DJs but the environment & the streets I walked around or that the music came from.

Mr Eazi & Young Zilo Boiler Room event photography

A couple of weeks back I had the pleasure of capturing some event photography for Boiler Room x Ballantine’s True Music In The Round. This was the first proper socially distanced live music event that I’ve documented since the pandemic so it felt really exciting to be in among the action again.

Photographing "unruly novelist & poet" S S Haque.

I’ve known Shahla for over 15 years but we hadn’t stayed in touch, for one reason until another. That was until we started following each other online and she later emailed me to ask if I would do some portrait photography for her, to which I said, “of course!”

BTS with Vision of Sound Podcast

In August I launched Vision of Sound, a fortnightly podcast series in which I chat to other artists and creative people that make work about or inspired by music.

Guests include Jeremy Deller, Wumzum & George Nindi, Emma Warren and Lil Ye’s Ali Graham.

You might notice that while I am a music photographer, there are no music photographer’s mentioned, but do keep an eye on the next episode as they are on their way!

It had been a while since I had a consistent medium to channel my love for and interest in other artists and creative people- whom I’ve championed in various ways throughout my life via zines, or blogs or events. As a fan of podcasts and radio shows like Stance, Creative Rebels, London Scenery and George The Poet, audio seemed like the obvious way to do it.

Ocean All Over in Bristol

It’s great to back (safely) documenting & photographing people and projects again, following peak lock-down.
Last week I went safely to Bristol (truly one of my favourite city’s) with two of my favourite people & long time collaborators- singer-performer-writer Breezy Lee & poet-MC Sgt.Pokes, plus the multi-talented Alex Rigg of Ocean All Over.

GREAT BOOKS ABOUT MUSIC

Here’s a gallery of books that I’ve read, am reading or hope to read that are about or related to music that I’ve photographed or been involved with. I haven’t included Photography or image based books as I’m working on another project with which has music photography at its heart. Hold tight the visual people.

Shutter Hub

Recently, I entered two of Shutter Hub’s online exhibitions including Working From Home and am proud to have work selected for it. As so many photographers have been stuck at home for weeks now, it’s a particularly well timed subject. The images that I contributed were shot just a few weeks ago, including this one of my poor husband, who’s legacy will forever now be partly related to him lying in bed with his laptop.

Home Sweet Camera - An isolation inspired series.

When I moved to Paris in Jan 2010 I had no internet & no friends for 3 months which was very weird but led me to get up to all sorts of things with my camera. 👀
I looked back at some of the work I made then which led me to gather a collection of photos & videos I’ve made in the various homes I’ve lived in. Some are good, some are bad, some are funny & some are just straight up ridiculous. And you might spot some themes. I’ll be posting a selection on my Instagram account over the next few days / weeks and also here on the blog. It’s a sometimes surreal look at domestic boredom / creativity / exploration.
