An Afternoon with GD4YA Records
I got to spend a day with the GD4YA Records crew, shooting photos in and around SW2, Croydon and DnR Record Shop; captured last week.
GD4YA is a record label launched earlier this year by the pioneering producer El-B and Sam Levo to release “Authentic Southside Grooves,” from artists including Benny Ill, Karma and El-B himself. You can read more about the label at Hyponik.
South London has always and continues to carve out a strong musical heritage and this is something that the label is concerned with representing and pushing.
I felt quite emosh taking the train into Brixton and walking up Brixton Hill, past St Matthew’s Church and other old hang outs and it felt good to be involved in something which is very much rooted in a love for South London; which if you don’t know by now is where I’m from and has been and still is the inspiration for so much of my work.
Was really great meeting El-B for the first time, whose music I’ve listened to for years (he’s got some seriously good stories!) and also great to meet Dan at DNR Vinyl, London’s only record shop dedicated to Garage music and flicking through his vast collection of Polaroids of some of his punters.
As well as the label, the GD4YA crew have started a new night, aptly named South Circular. The first night on November at the brilliant Lightbox featured Kode9, Alexander Nut and Reverend Slippy alongside Karma, El B & Benny Ill.
Thanks to GD4YA for commissioning me to work with them - it’s an absolute honour to still be reppin’ South London’s bass community in 2019. See you at the dance.
Here are some photos from the shoot which include pics of the local environments that we walked through.
