Eye Level Closing Event

One of the programmes I’ve been most excited to be part of this year is Eye Level with Turf Projects. Centered around the sense of belonging fostered by counter and youth cultures, Eye Level invited five artists and artist groups- including myself, Sarah Stedeford, No Bounds Radio, Charlie Osborne & Reuben Robinson and DJ Nammy Wams x Shellsondeck to participate in an exhibition along with a series of events and workshops.

For my contribution, I created a Drumz of the South slideshow and with the help of their access lead Mira Hirtz, developed an audio description, voiced by Breezy Lee and produced by Jay Strange. I also designed a wall map of connections, inspired by the maps I drew during my peak years documenting the early dubstep scene and its community. Additionally, I led a counter-culture mapping workshop for MOSS, Turf's group of learning disabled artists, and a workshop for Croydon’s Young Archivists.

Twenty years ago, I never would have imagined there would be such a progressive, thoughtful, and inclusive arts organisation within Croydon’s Whitgift Shopping Centre, let alone that I’d have the privilege of collaborating with them. It’s been a great experience.

Interestingly, this opportunity came about after I had written to Rosie Crane Eckmire expressing interest in their previous project, Desire Paths. Although I couldn’t participate at the time due to maternity leave, she remembered me and reached out about Eye Level and here we are!

The Eye Level exhibition is open until 21st September, with a closing event on the same day.
