5 Years of GD4YA
This year is a special one for me with several anniversaries, including 20 years of my Drumz Of The South project and 5 years of GD4YA.
GD4YA, the record label founded by Sam Levo, is dedicated to releasing the authentic sounds of South London via artists like Benny Ill, Karma, Yaw Evans and El-B. The label draws inspiration from the rich musical heritage of the area, particularly the dark garage and early dubstep scenes that emerged from places like Streatham and Croydon.
I’ve had the privilege of collaborating with GD4YA from the very beginning, visually capturing the locations and environments that influence the label’s artists and their music.
This role echoes my early work as a photographer for the South London Press newspaper, where I covered assignments throughout the region. For GD4YA, I often photograph at night utilising the street lights and atmosphere that echo my original Drumz Of The South work. It's been an amazing way for me to stay connected to my native South London while catching up with some of the UK's most innovative music producers.
Here is a selection of some of the scenes I've photographed, in neighborhoods like St Mary’s Cray, Croydon, Brixton Penge and Selhurst, plus a few examples of how the images are used for the label's releases. I look forward to my next GD4YA adventure.
