I am delighted to be showing a selection of images from the Drumz Of The South archive as a projection with audio description at TURF Projects new exhibition Eye Level.. There is also a large wall map of connections, similar too those that I used to draw at the height of the Drumz Of The South days.

Friendships are formed on the dance floor. In smoky rooms with sticky floors, in pub toilets with stickers covering the stall doors, we carve out our own sense of belonging. We operate new frequencies, climb up lampposts and flyer city streets to shout that we are here and we will find each other.

Within Eye Level, five artists and artist groups explore South London subcultures, examining the circular nature of trends in music and fashion. Archival works and new commissions map out South London’s rich musical heritage and the communities built in response. From early dubstep nights and the precursors to grime, to today’s up-and-coming musicians and designers, Eye Level traces the scenes and creatives who all contribute to new Cultures. 

As trends circle, ebb and flow, the use of self-expression to find belonging remains constant. Old haunts close, new hubs emerge, but the music and stories we share are permanently etched. Eye Level is a call to preserve, to nourish, and to notice
